Questions You Should Ask Yourself!

Before you begin designing your pole barn there are a few questions you should consider that could drastically change the outcome of how your pole barn looks and performs. Let’s get started!

  • How tall is the tallest item to be stored?
  • How wide is the widest stored item?
  • How do you plan on moving these items into your building?
  • Would an Overhead (garage) door or sliding door be best?
  • What type of floor are you considering
  • What services do you plan on using? (Gas, Hydro, Water…)
  • What windows/doors do you need and where should they be located?
  • Are you keeping livestock? If so, ventilation is important.
  • What style of building suits your needs?
  • What type of roofing would you like?
  • What colour/material siding would look best/perform better for you?
  • Be aware of the local requirements set in place by the city that may restrict certain things like
    square footage, maximum height etc…

Roofing Styles

This is one of the most important aspects when it comes to designing your barn as a roof supplies can supply alot of storage inside and even outside your barn depending on the needs and look your are going for!

The most common roof styles are as follows

Lean-To Style

Gambrel Roof Style

Hip Roof Style

Gable Roof Style

Vinyl Siding vs. Metal Siding

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is a very durable and clean looking option for pole barn projects of all sizes. It offers a wide array of colours and styles to match your needs. That being said this wide variety of options can also lead to cheaper costs then metal siding which is an advantage. Another advantage would have to be that since the vinyl is dyed all the way through the core of the material if there is a scratch or dent it will be much less noticeable then the dents and scratches of a metal siding. All in all vinyl is a great option at a great price but if you are looking for more of a rustic feel metal might be for you.

The life of metal versus vinyl is something that must be mentioned due to the fact that if maintained properly it will last nearly forever. That being said it is much easier to scratch and dent then vinyl but at the same time it is alot easier to fix as it can just be molded back into position with a few swings of a hammer where vinyl cannot. Whatever you decide Amherst Supply will make sure you have all the best options and give you the best possible price!
